Learning objectives: 1.Describe major mental illnesses and associated symptoms and behaviors; 2.Learn de-escalation techniques that should successfully end a crisis encounter; 3.Learn how to stay calm and in control, to maintain professionalism in highly emotional, intense situations; 4.Practice implementing the de-escalation skills in mental health crisis scenarios; 5.Recognize the perspective of individuals with a mental illness on crisis, crisis response and recovery; 6.Identify mental health and other crisis resources available to assist in a crisis and in long term recovery; 7.Show how techniques taught in this class can be applied to almost any situation involving individuals who are upset, uncooperative, or threatening; Practice coaching the practical exercises. Includes live action scenarios with professional actors with CIT crisis coaches.
