Preventing Trauma and Supporting Mental Health Recovery

A dynamic and interactive one day class on:

  • safety
  • preventing crisis
  • communication
  • de-escalation skills and strategies
  • eliminating or minimizing the trauma of a crisis

for professionals working with children and adolescents. 

TOPICS:
  • Mental health overview
    • Causes of mental health disorders
    • Signs and symptoms of mental health disorders
    • Medications
  • Understanding mental health crisis: self harm, substance abuse, domestic assault
  • Physical safety-for responder and person in crisis
  • Verbal and non-verbal de-escalation skills and techniques
  • State licensing requirements, reporting, confidentiality issues
  • Suicide prevention
  • The whole person in crisis

ALSO INCLUDES:

Realistic scenario based practical exercise training guided by a trained Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) coach and a professional actor to give class participants hands on experience with de-escalation skills in a mental health crisis response.
